Maia Zasler - Visual Artist

I have a lot going on in my head - ideas, opinions, inquiries, anxieties. Art serves as a way to make sense of it all, from the inner workings of my mind to the events in the outer world. Art is therapeutic. Art is frustrating. Art is exactly what I need it to be.

I have never been able to define myself by using one or two adjectives or assuming a specific "title." My passions, interests, and personality do not fit into a neat box, concisely labeled. I feel that my art is the same way. What I create, the media I use, and the messages behind each of my projects vary. My stylistic choices do as well.

Although there appears to be recurring line work or incorporated text, I am primarily motivated by the materials in front of me or the emotion behind my work. I create to express personal aspects of myself and my thoughts on the complex world around me. Visual art gives me a way meld my love for words and patterns into a piece that everyone can understand... that doesn't need to be translated.

Poetry has remained a constant in my life. I use the word, "poetry," loosely. I find poetry to be in the composition of rhyming lines or series of stanzas, but also in the visuals I render on canvas, in the photos I capture with my phone, and in the moments from which I derive artistic inspiration.

My work has changed significantly over the years. My technical abilities have improved, but I believe my greatest skillset lies

in my commitment to

my craft. I am not

afraid to change a

piece, to start over, or

to destroy something.
